Rising Star Cherotich hands Kenya bronze in Steeplechase at Paris Olympics

PARIS, France, Aug 7 – Rising Star Faith Cherotich lived up to her expectations of medalling at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after scooping bronze in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase in a hotly contested race at the Stade de France on Tuesday night.

Consistent Cherotich, stuck to her game plan of running behind the seasoned athletes led by her compatriot and world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Yavi and defending champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda.

With Chepkoech setting the pace high by running from the front for the better time of the race, the young Cherotich never faded away even when it mattered most in the final lap and eventually landing on a bronze medal in a Personal Best time of 8:55.15.

It was a tight contest in the last 400m between world champion Yavi and Peruth who was destined to victory but did not have enough energy in her tank to see Yavi overtake the Olympic champion for gold in an Olympic Record of 8:52.76 as the Ugandan settled for silver in a National Record of 8:53.34.
